Jamie Draven - Radio Times (22-28 Feb 2003)

ONE TO WATCH

JAMIE DRAVEN
Billy Elliot's nasty older brother says that dark, brooding look is getting him down

Who's this glowering fellow?
It's Jamie Draven. And he's actually a bit shy.

His face seems awfully familiar...
Remember Tony, the bullying older brother in the film Billy Elliot? That was him. And the cop turned serial killer in BBC1's Messiah? Him, too. And what about the yong SAS man, Jamie Dow, in Ultimate Force, alongside Ross Kemp?

Jamie Draven?
You got it.

Wasn't he tortured?
In one of the Ultimate Force episodes he was captured by terrorists and beaten up

Ouch...did it hurt?
In fact it did - the actors doing the beating got a bit carried away. "They gave me a few real bumps and bruises," says Draven.

All in the name of acting, eh?
Yes. And not bad considering Draven's never been to drama college. He left school in Manchester to come to London, where he landed the role of Dex, the yong scally and murder suspect in the meaty ITV drama Butterfly Collectors, alongside Pete Postlewaite.

Heavy stuff.
Quite. He's only 23 and already confesses to being "a bit tired of playing edgy characters".

So where does he go from here?
His next role is in the forthcoming ITV1 comedy Watermelon. Based on the book by Marion Keyes, it stars Anna Friel.

Sounds as if it could be a bit of a laugh...
A relief more like, according to Draven. "I've done a lot of characters who've got the world on their shoulders, so Watermelon was a godsend," he sighs.

And an excuse to roll around with Anna Friel?
Relax. He's a professional.

Jamie Draven - Ceefax (13th June 2003)

DRAVEN BACK IN SAS DRAMA ULTIMATE FORCE

Billy Elliot star Jamie Draven returns for a second series of the SAS drama Ultimate Force on June 18.
The 24-year-old, who played Billy's older brother, says he is untouched by the attention his career is attracting.
"I don't pay any attention to the hype because it doesn't interest me," he says. "I don't mind what other people think of my work really.
"If I'm happy with what I've done that's fine. The key to success is knowing you put your best effort in."

Jamie Draven plays young SAS trooper Jamie Dow in TV series Ultimate Force.
He was newly-recruited in the last series, and quickly taken under the wing of Sergeant Henno Garvie, played by Ross Kemp.
"Henno looked at him and immediately saw someone who could be the best," says Draven. "He then tried to guide Jamie through."
The last series focused on Jamie's introduction to the SAS. This time we find out what his old life was like.

Ultimate Force sees the brother and sister of SAS trooper Jamie Dow (Jamie Draven) turn to him for help, after their father becomes violent.
"Jamie comes from a difficult family background and he's determined to succeed," says Draven.
"It's good to see more of the clash with his home life because that's what makes people interesting."
His initial reaction is to seek revenge but he knows that taking the law into his hands could jeopardise his career.

Jamie Draven prepared for his role in SAS drama Ultimate Force by embarking on a fitness and running programme.
Draven has also been happy to do many of his own stunts.
"All the action was fun and I see the appeal of the SAS," he said.
"They're trained well and do some amazing things."
"I tried to get myself sorted so I felt right in the role, but at the end of the day, we're all actors."

Jamie Draven says he relished the challenge of playing SAS trooper Jamie Dow in Ultimate Force.
"I enjoy playing him because everything has to be contained and controlled," explains Draven. "But it takes a very special person to do that job for real"
He is also keen to get his teeth into more challenging roles in the future.
I'm not going to work just for work," he says. "I want to do things I can look back on and feel a bit of self- respect," adds the actor.
